Bunker goes to New York-er

A story about what happens when our passion for illustration and book design meets Lorenzo Mattotti, and they fly all together to New York.
When an artist creates a cover for The New Yorker magazine, that means they’re among the best illustrators in the world. And Lorenzo Mattotti designed 32 of them, between 1993 and 2014. In designing a book that collects all of them, including the sketches, we had the chance to test our attention for detail, illustration and good typography. So when Melania Gazzotti and Logos publishing house offered us to design the book Mattotti. Covers for The New Yorker, we felt as if we had arrived in Manhattan.

"I was thinking which format could celebrate Lorenzo’s works, then I took an issue of The New Yorker and everything became clear: I already had the perfect format in my hands."
— Francesco Ceccarelli

This book collects a huge amount of materials that describe the Big Apple – and the world – through 32 covers. From the preparatory sketches to the original illustrations, including everything you always wanted to know about the contributions that Lorenzo Mattotti has produced in 20 years for The New Yorker, you can find everything in this book.

"In 1993, we didn’t have the Internet, but we still had to meet printing deadlines. So I shipped one of my illustrations with the Concorde. Just the illustration, though. I stayed at home."
— Lorenzo Mattotti

Together with Melania Gazzotti and Lorenzo Mattotti, we assembled and disassembled, observed, designed and redesigned, wrote and rewrote, had never-ending phone calls, fought against time (although we had already run the marathon in November), trusted each others and relied on each others, we laughed, teamed-up, and never stopped our quest. And eventually we flew to New York. And we had a lot of fun. And we’re looking forward to going back there.

The book was presented on February 6, 2018 during the opening of the exhibition Lorenzo Mattotti. Covers for The New Yorker at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in New York. The New Yorker, Art Tribune, Simone Sbarbati on Frizzi Frizzi and Illustratore italiano wrote articles about the event.
